Why Buy Local?
TO KEEP IT WEIRD:
Locally-owned businesses are one-of-a-kind enterprises that are vital
to the unique character of the Louisville Metro community.
TO KEEP YOUR $ LOCAL:
Designed by: Pip Pullen
local businesses employ an array of supporting services, circulating money in
and strengthening the local economy. Dollars spent at community-based merchants
create a multiplier effect -- a boost to the local economy that results
from locally-owned independent businesses, owners, and employees spending
business revenue within the region.
A recent study of Louisville-area businesses shows that for every $100 spent a locally-owned, independent business, $55 is reinvested locally, whereas only $14 is reinvested when that same money is spent at a national chain. And results are even stronger for restaurants. (Click here to download the study.)
According to the 2007 Economic Census, Jefferson County produces annual retail store sales across all lines of goods (excluding motor vehicles and gas stations) of roughly $10 billion. Assuming this survey provides a representative sample of area independent retailers, a market shift of just 10% from chains to independents would retain an additional $416 million in the regional economy every year.
TO KEEP MORE JOBS: Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for our neighbors.
TO KEEP OUR ENVIRONMENT: Buying from a local business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation, less packaging, and products that you know are safe and well made, because we stand behind them.
TO KEEP GOOD KARMA: We know you, and you know us. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. Local owners have a natural interest in their communities’ long-term health. Community-based businesses are essential to charitable endeavors, and their owners frequently serve on local boards and support numerous causes.
TO KEEP YOUR OPTIONS: When a fewer number of larger stores dominate a community, it is the national chains that choose what reaches customers, and options dwindle. A multiplicity of independent retailers creates great diversity of products available to shoppers.
Each time we spend a dollar, LIBA encourages you to weigh the full value of your choices, not solely to yourselves immediately, but for the future you want for Louisville.
